Learning how to fire a warning shot in L.A. Noire would have been a lot easier if Rockstar had taken the time to explain it. Since they didn’t, I’ve written an explanation of my own. Read on for a quick and dirty guide to L.A. Noire warning shots.
L.A. Noire Warning Shots Revealed
To fire a warning shot in L.A. Noire, you have to be in a chase sequence, and your character — probably Cole Phelps — must already have his gun drawn. There’s no way to make him draw his gun; he’s either drawn it or not.
When the suspect is fleeing, hold your left trigger button (LT on Xbox) and a circle will show up on the screen while you are aimed at the suspect. This circle will slowly fill up (you must keep aiming at the suspect!), and when it is completely full, you will go into a very brief cut-scene that will show your character firing the shot and your suspect freezing in his tracks.
Why Fire a Warning Shot?
Sometimes you can’t just shoot fleeing suspects. You might need some information out of them. And sometimes you’re just too slow to tackle them. The warning shot is a nice middle ground.
Plus, you need to fire a warning shot to get the Not So Hasty achievement.
Your first opportunity to fire a warning shot in L.A. Noire is in the case Buyer Beware. If you have just successfully fired a warning shot and didn’t unlock the achievement, you are probably wondering why. The reason is because the achievement requires that you be an LAPD detective. In Buyer Beware you are not yet a detective, so that doesn’t count. It’s a good place to practice, but you’ll have to wait until later in the game to mark this one off your checklist.
